The startup page that Microsoft Edge shows at launch doesn’t display Top Sites, only suggested content. While that sounds better, it's actually not — the distracting news feed is. Microsoft's Kyle Pflug, Principal PM Lead for Edge Developer, gave a talk at this year's online Build conference covering all the new capabilities. I'll touch on the high points, with an emphasis. The new Microsoft Edge is based on Chromium and was released on January 15, 2020. It is compatible with all supported versions of Windows, and macOS. With speed, performance, best in class compatibility for websites and extensions, and built-in privacy and security features, it's the only browser you'll ever need. Try the new Microsoft Edge now. 8 hours ago  Microsoft has just released a new Microsoft Edge Dev update as the company prepares to promote version 91 to the beta channel. Microsoft is playing around with the vertical tabs button on Edge Canary.

What you need to know

  • Microsoft is testing out new options within the vertical tabs button on its Edge browser.
  • The button now shows an option to view recently closed items and to add all tabs to a collection.
  • The feature is being tested in Microsoft Edge Canary.

In the upper-left corner of Microsoft Edge, there's a button to switch between vertical tabs and horizontal tabs. Vertical tabs are a relatively new feature, and they're still being tweaked by Microsoft. It seems that in addition to working on the vertical tabs themselves, that Microsoft is playing around with a few ideas for what to do with the button in the corner of the browser.

In Edge Canary, Microsoft is currently testing additional options that appear when you click that button. The options were spotted and highlighted by Reddit user Leopeva64-2. In GIFs shared by Leopeva64-2, the browser has an option to view recently closed items and to add all tabs to a collection.

Both of these options could come in handy, but they create a tradeoff for people that switch between vertical and horizontal tabs. In the stable version of Edge, clicking the button switches between vertical and horizontal tabs immediately. If Microsoft adds these new options to the button, you'll have to click an extra time to switch between horizontal and vertical tabs.

That might be worth the tradeoff to have some of the new options. Microsoft may allow the menu to be customizable. Features in the Canary channel of Edge often get changed quite a bit before shipping to everyone. In many cases, they don't arrive for general users at all.

Microsoft has just released a new Microsoft Edge Dev update as the company prepares to promote version 91 to the beta channel.

In other words, this is the final build that the company ships as part of Edge version 91 to Dev users, though small patches could still land in the coming days. But on the other hand, nothing big would change, so this is very likely to be the final feature lineup scheduled to go live in the beta channel rather sooner than later.

Microsoft Edge Dev build 91.0.864.1 therefore doesn’t bring too many big changes, though it includes an option to prompt before closing a window with multiple tabs open in an attempt to prevent accidental shutdowns of the browser.

Edge 91 due to launch in late May

This is something that should have been there from the very beginning, to be honest, as I mistakenly closed the browser several times before and then had to recover the entire session after launching Edge one more time. And of course, it’s a feature that’s already available in most other browsers out there.

Then, Microsoft Edge Dev build 91.0.864.1 adds the ability to clear Media Foundation data on demand, and the company says it’s also working on a new option to do the same thing when closing the browser.

There’s also a new option to print documents at their actual size or to fit them to the page, as well as a management policy to enable Math Solver.

How Do I Update Microsoft Edge

All in all, this is just a small release before Microsoft Edge 91 makes its way to the beta channel. According to the official release schedule, Edge 91 should reach the beta channel in the week of April 27, so we’re only a few days away from this moment. The public launch for production devices of Edge 91 is due to happen in the week of May 27.
